What is Hypospadias?
Hypospadias is a congenital condition in boys where the urinary opening (meatus) is not located at the tip of the penis. It may be associated with penile curvature (chordee), a hooded foreskin, and an abnormal urine stream passing on the legs.
When should parents consult a doctor?
- Opening not at the tip
- Spraying or downward urine stream
- Curvature of penis
- Hooded foreskin appearance
Types of Hypospadias
- Glanular / Subcoronal: opening near the head; often single-stage repair.
- Distal penile / Midshaft: opening along the shaft; straightening may be needed.
- Proximal / Penoscrotal / Perineal: opening near the scrotum/perineum; sometimes staged repair.
Why is Surgery Needed?
- Normal urine flow and straight stream
- Correction of penile curvature
- Normal cosmetic appearance
- Healthy function in adulthood
