What is Hypospadias?

Hypospadias is a congenital condition in boys where the urinary opening (meatus) is not located at the tip of the penis. It may be associated with penile curvature (chordee), a hooded foreskin, and an abnormal urine stream passing on the legs.

When should parents consult a doctor?

  • Opening not at the tip
  • Spraying or downward urine stream
  • Curvature of penis
  • Hooded foreskin appearance

Types of Hypospadias

  • Glanular / Subcoronal: opening near the head; often single-stage repair.
  • Distal penile / Midshaft: opening along the shaft; straightening may be needed.
  • Proximal / Penoscrotal / Perineal: opening near the scrotum/perineum; sometimes staged repair.

Why is Surgery Needed?

  • Normal urine flow and straight stream
  • Correction of penile curvature
  • Normal cosmetic appearance
  • Healthy function in adulthood

How is Hypospadias Surgery Done?

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia using microsurgical techniques. Depending on the type, the repair may be single-stage or staged. Your surgeon will explain the plan after evaluation.
